Baby and Infant Massage
Massage is a wonderful tool for relaxation and pain reduction for adults, as well as children. Every child may go through their own stage of nervousness, anxiety, delayed motor skills (clumsiness), late speech, reduced appetite, depression and aches and pains. Everyone needs good, appropriate loving touch, positive energy flow and affection.
Premature babies, infants with colic, adopted infants, babies from planned and acute C-sections, benefit greatly from any form of good human contact and stimulation. Massage stimulates circulation and the immune system and promotes heart activity, breathing and digestion.
Infants, Babies and Children with Special Needs
Massage can have a positive impact on babies with mental tardiness, physical and mental handicaps, hearing impairments, blindness, autism, down's syndrome, spina bifida, children with DAMP (deficit in attention, motor control and perception), ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), asthma, diabetes and child rheumatoid
arthritis.
If you question whether your child or one you care for should receive a massage, speak to the child's parent, physical therapist or physician first.
Who can give a massage?
Parents, extended family, grandparents, care givers or anyone emotionally close to the child can give the gift of positive touch to a child.
When can I start giving my child a massage?
A child can be massaged at any time, in most cases, from day one. If you don't start right away, any time you and the child are ready to begin is fine. It is primarily up to the child when or if they want to be massaged. If your child doesn't want or like massage, don't be discouraged. Take your time and wait for them to be ready. A few minutes a day can change the life of a child with any or no problem areas.
Premature babies can be massaged as soon as they are 1000 grams (2 pounds 2 ounces). Start by holding the babies body part, share your good energy, by relaxing yourself, talk to them and encourage them to let go of any tension and relax. When they reach six pounds and after a couple of weeks of just holding areas, start slowly with oils and massage lightly. A newborn can be massaged lightly while being held for a couple of minutes.Just let the presents of your touch be enough. An infant over one month old can receive massage anywhere from 15-20 minutes, as long as the child wants the touch.
A child may allow for more massages up to the age of 6-months, usually the age when children become more mobile and are looking to explore.Massages should still continue even after the baby starts crawling and walking; the massage should just adjust to a sitting position and in more of a playful way. If you find that your infant seems to not have time for a massage, try using those little moments of closeness (a hug, cuddling, while reading a book) and massage over the clothing.
