What does an Open Bore Siemens Magnetom Skyra 3T MRI mean for me?
The letters MRI stand for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. An MRI machine uses magnets and radio waves to take pictures of the inside of the body. There are many factors which contribute to the quality of the images but the single most important factor is the strength of the magnet.
The word Tesla is used to measure the strength of a magnet. For over twenty years, the strongest MRI magnet was 1.5 Tesla, or 1.5 T, previously called high-field MRI. That has changed. 3T is now the new, strongest magnet available. Compared with weaker magnets, the image quality and the speed of taking images are literally twice as good.
This unmatched image quality comes with an additional patient-friendly feature. Soon after MRI machines were introduced, physicians realized that any patient who was the least bit claustrophobic could not tolerate the narrow, long ‘tube’ in which they had to lie. Open magnets were introduced as a solution but at the cost of a lower strength magnet. And just as the ‘open magnets’ were getting a bit stronger, the new 3T magnet solves the claustrophobia problem.
Years of research have resulted in a much wider and much shorter openings, which is called the ‘open bore.' In fact, for patients having an MRI of the head or neck, the distance from the face to the inside surface of the magnet is actually more in a 3T magnet than it is in an ’open magnet.’
For many abnormalities of the brain, spine, and the extremities, MRI has been the preferred method of imaging. Now with 3T technology, MRI is even better. The combination of increased speed and image quality has also dramatically improved the ability of MRI to evaluate virtually any part of the body.
