Uphill Interval Training Study

Do you enjoy running? Would you like to improve your running ability? If so, you may be able to take part in a study that examines the effects of uphill interval training that focuses on the three main elements of distance running performance:

  • VO2max
  • Lactate threshold
  • Running economy

Uphill training has often been used by distance runners; however, there is little scientific evidence about how it impacts these three physiological mechanisms that affect distance running performance. Our lab has researched this form of training in the past and was the first to report that uphill training, in general, benefits these physiological elements.

For this study, you will visit Avera Sports three times per week for six weeks. You will complete two uphill interval sessions and one "recovery" session per week. There is NO COST to you to participate.

To participate, you must be 18 to 40 years old and not experiencing any lower body issues at this time, such as knee pain or shin splints.

You do NOT have to be a highly trained or experienced runner to participate. The most important qualification we seek is that you’ll be committed to finishing the study and helping expose the benefits of uphill training for distance runners.

For more information or to learn how to participate, please contact Derek Ferley, PhD, at 605-322-5183.
