Avera Therapy

When pain and stiffness increase the difficulty of doing the things you love, Avera Therapy is here to help. Whether it is a recent sprain, a sports injury or arthritis, Avera Therapy can help you move better, feel better and live better.

Our rehabilitation teams are found across the region and provide a broad range of services including physical, occupational and speech therapy.

  • Physical therapy treats injuries and diseases using therapeutic exercise and other hands-on techniques that focus on alleviating pain and improving posture, strength, endurance, balance, coordination and joint mobility.
  • Occupational therapy treats issues that arise from a disruption in a person’s occupations. Occupation is everything that people do to occupy themselves including taking care of personal needs, activities that allow one to enjoy life, achieving developmental milestones or work. Occupational therapy can increase independence with a variety of diagnoses including: Parkinson’s disease, stroke, painful hands and arms, spinal cord injury, diabetes, congenital heart failure, mental illnesses, dementia, Alzheimer’s, developmental delays, autism, lymphedema, wounds, fractures, joint replacements, etc.
  • Speech therapy addresses issues with communication, memory, problem solving, swallowing, sound production, stuttering and voice for all ages.

Therapy Services

Inpatient Therapy

Sometimes an injury or illness requires additional time in the hospital to focus on recovery. Avera Therapy offers services that strengthen individuals’ physical, cognitive, psychological, social and/or vocational abilities during their hospital stay.

Outpatient Therapy

Outpatient therapy with Avera therapists includes prevention, screening, consultation, assessment and diagnosis, treatment, intervention, management, counseling and follow-up for the services listed below.

Back/Neck Therapy

Physical therapy for back and neck pain uses active techniques (such as education and assistance on strengthening muscles, restoring muscular flexibility, joint mobility and spine motion) as well as passive techniques (such as ice, heat, ultrasound, traction, electrical stimulation). Education on proper posture and ergonomic principles for the spine allows the patient to return to normal activities with new awareness of his or her body mechanics.

Hip/Knee/Leg Therapy

When a joint or muscle in the hip, knee or leg isn’t working properly, pain or stiffness can occur. Physical and occupational therapy can help. By examining the patient’s walking, range of motion, strength, coordination and the way he or she performs activities, Avera therapists can identify the source of the pain and work with the patient on a treatment plan.

Shoulder Therapy

A shoulder condition could result from a rotator cuff/labral tear, frozen shoulder, overuse injuries or other issues. Avera therapists strive to decrease pain and improve motion, strength and function while the patient is on the road to recovery.

Neurological Rehabilitation

When disease or injury affects the nervous system, Avera therapists use evidence-based exercises and programs to improve movement, function, speech and activities.

Possible conditions Avera Therapy addresses:

  • Stroke
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Multiple sclerosis, Guillian-Barre syndrome, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • Vestibular disorders and dizziness
  • Frequent falls
  • Visual impairments
  • Alzheimer’s disease

Orthopedic Rehabilitation

After an orthopedic injury or surgery, Avera therapists provide expert, quality care and support to help rebuild strength, motion and function in the affected bone, muscle, ligament or tendon.

Women's and Men's Health Therapy

Many Avera therapists have specialized training to help women (and men) with a variety of medical conditions. These therapists evaluate patients and design a personalized treatment plan aimed at promoting and enhancing lifelong health.

Hand Therapy

After surgery or injury, pain in the hand, wrist and arm can develop. This pain can range from mild to debilitating, affecting your ability to do your job or hobbies. Avera therapists have specific training for restoring function and relieving pain in the wrists, hands and fingers.

They are dedicated to providing the best possible treatment for children ages newborn to teen in a stimulating environment.

Possible conditions Avera Therapy addresses:

  • Movement disorders
  • Chronic pain
  • Balance disorders
  • Speech-language disorders
  • Gait disturbances
  • Sensory deficits
  • Feeding and swallowing disorders

Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic therapy is a specialized treatment method used by therapists to help patients recover with better results. Water improves motion and flexibility, helps muscles relax and reduces pain. The natural buoyancy reduces gravitational pull and therefore makes exercising easier than on land.

Sports Therapy

Sports therapy uses manual therapy, stretches and exercises to reduce pain, increase mobility and improve overall performance. After an injury, sports therapy can be used to improve athletic ability and prevent future injuries. Avera Therapy works with the athlete’s specific goals to get him or her back in the game.

Possible conditions Avera Therapy addresses:

  • Sprains, strains
  • Joint pain
  • Overuse injuries
  • Arthritis
  • Concussions
  • Post-operation

Vestibular Rehabilitation

Avera therapists work with walking, balance and dizziness problems. They conduct a fall risk assessment to determine balance and dizziness problems and then create a treatment plan for the patient. Therapy may include exercises that help with balance, exercises that help the brain resolve differences in inner ear signals, or exercises that improve the ability to visually focus.

Speech-Language Therapy

Avera Therapy offers services for disorders related to speaking, understanding or swallowing. With the help of our therapists, these services and exercises can improve the patient’s ability to express him or herself, communicate more effectively, work performance and overall self-esteem in both children and adults.

Possible conditions Avera Therapy addresses:

  • Slurred or mumbled speaking abilities
  • Stuttering
  • Vocal cord polyps
  • Learning disabilities
  • Problems with comprehension
  • Swallowing disorders

Do I need a physician referral for physical, speech or occupational therapy?
If you need physical therapy, Avera Therapy offers direct access to its services, meaning you don’t need a physician referral for treatment; you can refer yourself. However, our speech and occupational therapy services require a physician referral.

What should I wear to my therapy appointment?
Wear loose-fitting clothing so you can expose the area we will evaluate and treat. Gowns and shorts are available if you need them. Bring tennis shoes as exercise is important for treating most disorders.

Will insurance pay for therapy?
Insurance coverage rules vary from company to company. Some insurance companies have a deductible to be met first, some have co-pays and some have both. Some insurance companies require a prior authorization before starting any therapy, but this is completed by our office staff. The majority of insurance companies have a limited number of visits per year, but this may vary by company. Our office staff will verify your benefits and we can discuss them with you. However, we encourage you to contact your insurance company for more information on your plan.

Does Medicare cover therapy?
If it is considered medically necessary, Medicare will cover therapy. A physician must approve the plan of care by reading and signing your evaluation and goals we have set for you.

What are my options for paying my co-pays and deductibles?
We accept cash, check and credit card.

How much does each visit cost?
The cost of each visit varies with each individual treatment plan. Our staff can discuss charges with you on an individual basis.

How long will each appointment be?
Arrive 15 minutes before your first appointment to complete the registration process. This appointment runs 45 to 60 minutes. The duration of subsequent visits (typically 30 to 60 minutes each) are based upon your evaluation, plan of care and condition.

How often will I come for therapy?
After your initial evaluation, your therapist will consider your condition and the doctor's order when establishing the frequency of your treatments.

How long will I need to come to therapy?
You will attend therapy sessions until you and your therapist decide that you have reached your desired level of function or that further skilled therapy would not be beneficial.

What should I bring to my first appointment?
Bring your insurance card, driver’s license and your therapy prescription (if you have one). We will copy these documents to keep on file.

What is the cancellation policy?
Notify us as soon as possible (preferably within 24 hours) of any appointment you are going to miss so we can book another patient in that appointment slot.
