Public Transportation Service

Transportation Avera St. Anthony’s Hospital Transportation System began operation in July 2000 and is coordinated through the hospital’s Social Services Department.

The service provides rides Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. within the city of O’Neill, Neb. and out of town as scheduled or needed. Four regular/full-time transportation associates administer the program, with the help of two additional employees, all of whom cross-train in transportation best-practices in order to provide safe and efficient dispatching and transportation.

The service is based on demand and response, and while preference is given to elderly and disabled persons, it is available to the general public as time, drivers and vehicle availability allow.

Staffers strongly encourage users to pre-schedule in-town trips as much as possible. Shorter trips mostly can be added without issue, but users who seek out-of-town trips should schedule them as far in advance as possible, to assure availability of drivers and vehicles.

In 2015, drivers provided helpful and safe service to more than 3,100 elderly passengers, 1,100 disabled riders and another 4,400 other persons. The service averages 1,100 one-way trips per month in town, driving 1,675 miles. In the same timeframe, it provided 38 one-way trips out of town driving an average of 1,875 miles per month.

Our fleet includes a 12-passenger bus which can accommodate two wheelchairs and a pair of seven-passenger vans which each can accommodate one wheelchair. In addition, the service operates two vans without wheelchair access that can carry seven and 14 people, respectively. The Avera St. Anthony’s logo and telephone number for service is displayed all vehicles.
