Avera St. Luke’s Emergency Department is staffed by physicians 24 hours a day, and our nurses and paramedics are always here to make sure care is available whenever you need it.
Avera St. Luke’s Hospital is in the process of receiving verification as a Level III Trauma Center from the American College of Surgeons, moving up to being only the third designated Area Trauma Hospital in South Dakota and the only one in this region.
Trauma centers are capable of providing a higher level of care. Level III trauma centers provide comprehensive, 24-hour, seven-days-a-week trauma care with a team including trauma and orthopedic surgeons, Emergency Department physicians and staff, anesthesia coverage, radiology services and CT scanning, operating room availability, lab and blood bank resources, along with other hospital services critical for a trauma patient.

Services
Our services include stabilization of life-threatening conditions, immediate treatment of major or minor illness or injury, and emergency treatment of trauma victims. Our team includes physicians, triage nurses, registered nurses, CareFlight registered nurses and paramedics, and support staff. We have eight Emergency Room beds and three trauma rooms, along with rooms for observation, pediatrics, obstetrics, eye care and orthopedics.
When you make a visit to our Emergency Department, be aware that the people who are most seriously hurt or who need care the most will be helped first. It's also helpful to have a list of your medications with you.
Attending physicians will be notified if the Emergency Room physician determines you need to be admitted. Emergency Department physicians serve only in this department, so your case will be handled by another physician if you are admitted to our hospital.
