Helen McKennan Award

Dr. Patrick McGreevy

Given in recognition of leadership and inspiration that extends past the mission of Avera McKennan to influence and impact the loyal community and beyond.

Dr. Patrick McGreevy and his family have had a long-time alignment with Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center. Starting in 1946, Patrick's father, Dr. John McGreevy, first arrived in Sioux Falls and began a one-man practice. He was joined by his brother and continued to grow the practice for the next twenty years into the McGreevy Clinics we know today.

During that time, a young Patrick McGreevy was learning the family trade by working for his father and even spent time in the waiting room while his dad rounded on patients. He fondly remembers the Sisters and developed an early appreciation for their dedication.

In 1969, Patrick McGreevy graduated from Creighton Medical School as a general surgeon. He immediately went to work for Avera McKennan where he went on to serve as Chief of Staff. During that time, he met and married his wife Kathy and had four children.

Today, after a long career in medicine, Dr. Patrick McGreevy enjoys retirement living and keeps busy serving on various community non-profit boards. He is a past board member of both the Avera McKennan Hospital Board of Trustees and foundation Board of Directors. He also volunteers for several area organizations and has supported the Avera McKennan Foundation's Caring for Community: Campaign for Avera Prince of Peace Retirement Community. Both he and his family remain dedicated to the mission of Avera McKennan and are proud to have collaborated their family practice with the Avera Health System.

Thank you for your dedication to the mission of Avera McKennan.

Creating 'The Guardian' Award

The recognition ceremony featured a special presentation of a custom-crafted award. The award is a replica of a sculpture once located on the Avera McKennan campus. Appropriately titled "The Guardian", the one-foot bronze piece was given to individuals as a gesture of appreciation for their contributions.
