Volunteer at Avera
Avera offers many volunteer opportunities through which you can gain new skills and experience, meet new friends, and gain a sense of meaning and purpose as you invest in the lives of others.
Who are Avera Volunteers?
Volunteers at Avera come from all walks of life. They may be students seeking to explore health care careers. They may be newcomers to the community who are looking for ways to get involved and meet people. They may be retirees who want to contribute their time and abilities.
Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. Most volunteers give of their time on a regularly scheduled basis. You might want to work one day a week, or several days a week. You might want to concentrate on one specific job, or volunteer in several areas. Our goal is to work with you.
“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.”
– Elizabeth Andrew
What do Volunteers Do?
Just a few opportunities include assisting hospice patients, rocking NICU babies, welcoming patients and visitors, escorting patients to their destination in the hospital, working in a hospital gift shop, visiting with patients, sewing prayer quilts, knitting caps for newborns, helping with activities at a nursing home, providing clerical support, and more.
Why Volunteers are Needed in Health Care
Human Resources is the single largest expense category in health care. It takes a large number of employees to operate a clinic, hospital or nursing home. Yet health care organizations are limited in the number of people they can hire. This is especially true in light of rising expenses and fewer health care dollars provided by government and insurance payors.
Health care employees provide the vital day-to-day care and service. Yet volunteers often provide that extra touch of compassion to a patient or family member in need. Every day, volunteers make a difference by comforting and helping others, and just being a friend. Volunteers also do important supportive work to bolster the health care workforce, and allow nurses and care techs to spend more time with patients. Volunteers invest in the lives of others and in our community by strengthening local health care.
