Environmental, Social and Governance Initiatives

Avera is committed to continuously improving its environmental impact, social responsibility and ethical governance practices (also known as ESG) to enhance patient care, community well-being and long-term sustainability.

Environmental

Avera is furthering our value of stewardship by reducing our carbon footprint and advocating for the integration of sustainable practices to positively impact patients and staff. Top priorities include eliminating Styrofoam system-wide, establishing a recycling program at a pilot location and reducing the use of plastic water bottles across our facilities.

Software

Avera has implemented software to establish energy consumption baselines and support asset sustainability through strategies in energy, water and waste management.

Energy Efficiency

Avera incorporates ice storage systems in its newer facilities to reduce upfront energy costs and increase equipment efficiency. These systems shift cooling loads from on-peak to off-peak hours by producing ice at night when electricity demand is lower and using that ice for cooling during the day. This peak-shaving capability reduces overall energy consumption and lowers carbon emissions.

Supply Chain

Avera’s Supply Chain has enhanced its logistics management operations by partnering with its medical surgical distributor to open the Avera Integrated Service Center.

Employee Awareness Program

An employee awareness program inspires and equips Avera employees with the knowledge and tools to incorporate sustainable practices into their daily lives – helping to reduce our overall environmental footprint.

Social

Avera prioritizes patient well-being, prevention, social determinants of health, fair and just treatment of patients and staff, promoting a positive work culture and more. Avera’s social initiatives reflect its deep commitment to being people centered.

Community Health Workers

Avera employs Community Health Workers to build trust and cultural connections between the health system and diverse communities.

Community Partnerships

Avera supports community partnership programs that address behavioral health, access to care and transportation challenges.

Community Access

Avera offers comprehensive interpreter and translation services to ensure access to health care services for all.

Governance

In leadership and governance, Avera strives to ensure transparency, accountability and ethical decision making, including data protection and privacy.

Founded by the Benedictine Sisters of Yankton, SD, and Presentation Sisters of Aberdeen, SD, Avera is sponsored by Caring for Life Catholic Health Ministries, a leadership board comprised of Sponsor Members, including Sisters and lay members.
