Avera's Mission Statement
Avera is a health ministry rooted in the Gospel. Our mission is to make a positive impact in the lives and health of persons and communities by providing quality services guided by Christian values.
From Gospel times to the present, care of the sick has been seen as a special calling and privilege. Avera’s sponsors, the Benedictine and Presentation Sisters, encourage all members of the Avera community to understand their work as a healing ministry and to demonstrate God's love for all people. Accordingly, Avera is guided by the gospel values of compassion, hospitality and stewardship.
As a ministry of the Catholic Church, Avera is committed to promoting and defending human dignity, caring for the whole person, and giving special attention to the needs of the poor and marginalized, Avera is dedicated to maintaining the health and well-being of the rural communities of our region.
Avera adheres to the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services, a document developed by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. It provides authoritative guidance on certain moral issues that face Catholic health care today, and also explains how that guidance flows from the Church’s teaching on the dignity of every person, each of whom is created in God’s image.
Avera Haiti Mission
Since 2002 Avera has been raising funds and taking mission trips to the Grand’Anse, which is the westernmost part of Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Our volunteers support and participate in the work of a clinic operated by Friends for Health in Haiti, a hospice and an orphanage in the city of Jérémie, and a Breast Health Initiative that assists local physicians in providing education, clinics, ultrasounds, and biopsies for women in the region.
Community Benefits and Charity Care
Avera is committed to the integral relationship between the health of persons and the health of communities. We work with our community partners to assess needs and available resources. We then channel those resources back into the towns and cities of our region. We pay particular attention to providing a full spectrum of health care services and promoting health and preventative care at the local level.
As a health care ministry, Avera provides care to all who come to us, regardless of their ability pay. Avera’s mission also involves making a positive impact upon the communities we serve, often accomplished through providing community benefits such as:
- Community health services and screenings
- Health professions education
- Subsidized services, including 24-hour emergency services, hospice care and more
- Financial and in-kind contributions
- Community-building activities
