The Medication Aide Training Program utilizes lecture, discussion and one-on-one mock medication skills practice. Avera Education & Staffing Solutions’ program is designed to prepare the student to skillfully and safely administer medications in a facility.

Quality Improvement monitoring and continual evaluation of our training programs has facilitated a change in our Medication Administration (Medication Aide) Training Program (MATP).  This change includes a modification in curriculum and an addition of a new textbook, Sorrentino, S. & Remmert, L. (2009), Mosby’s Textbook for Medication Assistants, Mosby: St. Louis, MO.   Our MATP and this textbook are approved by the South Dakota Board of Nursing.

Independents must purchase, and facilities must provide each student with this textbook, for self-study and classroom instruction.  This textbook may be purchased from Elsevier or from a vendor of choice.  AESS strongly encourages students to have the textbook available and have read chapters 1 through 3, chapter 6, and chapters 8 through 13 prior to the first day of class.

Class schedule (minus 30 minute lunch break):

Day 1  8:30 a.m. –  5:00 p.m.  (Lecture: textbook chapters 1 - 3, 6, 8 - 13)

Day 2  8:30 a.m. –  5:00 p.m.  (Exam #1; Lecture:  textbook chapters  5, 7, 14 – 35; Exam #2)

Day 3  8:00 a.m. –  12:00 p.m.  (Clinical Laboratory instruction and Final Exam);

1:1 Skills Performance Evaluations (scheduled for one hour per student in the afternoon)

The Medication Aide Training Program is 20 hours, 16 of which are classroom and self-study work. Students will be expected to complete study guides outside of class time. During the third day of class, the student works one-on-one with the instructor and completes a written exam and a mock medication pass. The student must then complete a minimum of four hours of clinical training under the direct supervision of an RN.

A student may retake each exam only one time (i.e. if a student does not pass the retake of the exam, the student may not advance to the subsequent components of the MATP).  The student must pass all exams and laboratory instruction.  If the student is unable to pass any retake of the exam, the student may enroll at a later date in another class. No refund of fees for the failed class will be given.  Upon successful completion of all program components, the student and facility will be issued a Medication Administration Training Program certificate of completion.

The State of South Dakota requires students in the Medication Aide Training Program to have a high school diploma or GED and a copy must be provided to Avera Education & Staffing Solutions prior to certificate issuance.

Class Cancellation Policy

Class cancellation must be made two weeks prior to the scheduled class. If not received full class fee will be charged.

Cancellation Policy

Avera Education & Staffing Solutions reserves the right to cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment or complications beyond our control. In the event of a cancellation, we will attempt to accommodate student and/or facility needs when rescheduling. Avera Education & Staffing Solutions also reserves the right to change the dates and times. In this case, we will attempt to contact all registrants to reschedule for the new class.

If for any reason a class is canceled after registration confirmation approval has been sent, Avera Education & Staffing Solutions will notify registrants at the phone number listed on the registration.

Missed Classes

If a student misses one or more classes, the student can make up the classes on the next scheduled date of the same class that was missed. Refunds are NOT issued for missed classes.

Class Withdrawal Policy

A 25% fee will be charged for withdrawal of registration from a class if received less than ten (10) business days before the first day of class.

Registrations may be transferred to another individual to attend the original scheduled class.

A successful medication aide needs not only a strong initial training program but ongoing training as well. Continuing education programs, such as our one-hour program “Drug Diversion”, or other medication-related topics, can be presented conveniently on-site or via webinar to ensure your medication aides stay current with trends and regulations.
