Holiday Stress? How to Cope and Stay in the Spirit
What do you consider the perfect holiday? While we like to hope we can create a picture-perfect holiday, sometimes they tend to be the exact opposite and full of stress.
It's OK to sit back and take time for yourself this time of year, or even say no to some invitations. These are key to remembering what this time of year is all about – spending time with loved ones.
Follow these tips to stay in the spirit this year.
Plan and Prioritize What's Important
Create a to-do list and prioritize your tasks and must-do events. Keep expectations reasonable and don't be afraid to cut back your schedule. This is not the time of year to be taking on extra projects, more shopping, or too many Christmas parties. Choose wisely about how you spend your time this season.
Set a Budget
Prioritizing can help you with this important step. Overspending during the holidays is a common stressor. Be honest with yourself and what you can afford, and remember that creating memories doesn't mean spending a lot of money. Consider a potluck dinner instead of purchasing food for a crowd or a Secret Santa drawing instead of buying gifts for every family member.
Don't Be Afraid to Say No
One of the main reasons for stress during the holiday season is crazy schedules. It is easy to become spread too thin during this busy season between work or school commitments, parties, and other activities. You are not required to attend every event. Decide which are important and which will take too much time from other priorities.
Embrace Simplicity
You don't need the perfect Hallmark® holiday – just what's right for you. It's OK to keep things simple. Some of the simplest traditions are the ones you remember – reading books, decorating the tree, baking cookies or driving around looking at lights.

Maintain Your Healthy Routines
When life gets busy it's easy to skip a few workouts, go to bed late or grab a pizza instead of making a healthy meal. Remember to stay committed to these healthy choices when life gets busy. Exercise is a great stress reliever and a healthy diet and good sleep are also important.
Be Grateful
This is a great time to reflect on all that you are grateful for. Pause and focus on the joy – even when things don't go right. Sometimes a favorite recipe doesn’t turn out or gifts don’t arrive on time. One of the best ways to deal with these stressors is to take a few moments to pause and relax. Breathe deeply and even laugh.
Ask for Help When You Need It
It may be emotional, financial or other help you need. Delegate tasks when you need help. Other people can help with baking, decorating and gift-wrapping, too. Sharing these tasks allows everyone to feel like part of the celebration.
