Whether it’s on phones, tablets, computers or online gaming, it’s important to think about safety for kids of all ages. Now’s a great time to check in with your child about their use of technology and how they can appropriately and safely use their devices.
Talk About Internet and Social Media Safety With Your Kids
- Privacy—Passwords are between child and parent. Personal information, i.e.—age, address, phone numbers are not to be shared. No one should ever be asking them for this information.
- Age limits—Apps, social media, and online games have age limits for safety and to set an appropriate age of maturity. Talk to your children about following these limits.
- Cyberbullying—This type of bullying has been on the rise; the anonymity and not having to face the other person can increase how hurtful others are. Make sure to talk about what to do if this is happening to your child, but also remind them if they wouldn’t say it in person do not send it online.
Technology Tips for Parents
- Keep devices in an open area—This helps limit negative online behaviors and allows adults to more easily monitor how devices are being used.
- Set appropriate rules for use—Talk about expected rules for using their devices, i.e., the amount of time they can be on, who they can communicate with, what websites/social media apps are OK.
- Consider parental controls—Many platforms and devices will have parental controls to help adults stay ahead of negative influences and limit what activity a child can do.
- Technology contract—Have older kids? Sit down and consider creating a technology contract that outlines your expectations, your child’s responsibilities, and what consequences will occur if the agreements are broken. Find a simple child technology contract by the Center for Online Safety.
With the rise in children using technology it’s important to discuss with them the safety issues that come with the use of social media, internet and online games.
