Ten Top Tips for Summer Health

Summer is a great time to get outside and have fun. Whether you’re taking a hike, or celebrating with friends these tips can help ensure you stay safe and healthy.

1. Sunscreen
Wearing sunscreen plays a crucial part in keeping your skin healthy this summer. Practice wearing sunscreen every day with an SPF of at least 30 to keep your skin safe and protected. Learn how to choose sunscreen.

2. Hydrate
Drinking water is a healthy habit year-round. However, the summer heat can make it more difficult to keep your body hydrated. Drinking water consistently throughout the day or keeping a water bottle with you can help combat dehydration. Get more tips on hydration.

3. Practice Water Safety
Cooling off at the pool or lake is a great way to get outside in the summer. Practicing water safety is crucial at any age. For younger kids, ensure they are wearing a well-fitted lifejacket and accompanied by a supervising adult. 7. Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illnesses
Summer is a great time to enjoy the sun and be outside. However, too much fun in the sun can lead to heat-related illnesses. Know what to look for will help prevent illnesses.

  • Wear light-colored clothing to keep your body cool
  • Take frequent breaks to rest in the shade and rehydrate
  • Know your and your loved ones’ limits when it comes to the heat

9. Practicing Safe Food Preparation
Summertime brings barbeques, picnics and lots of time to eat outside. When planning a meal in the summer, make sure you are continuing to practice food preparation safety.

  • Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot; avoid food between the temperatures of 40 and 140 degrees.
  • Wash your hands frequently and effectively
  • Don’t cross-contaminate; always change out your knives and cutting boards when prepping raw meat
