#GivingTuesday: Putting Your Money Where the Mission Is
By Jennifer Dumke, PR Marketing Specialist, Avera McKennan Foundation
It’s called the most wonderful time of the year … especially for retailers. But the holiday season is also a time for giving.
First founded by New York’s 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation, #GivingTuesday is entering its sixth year as a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media.
For non-profit organizations like Avera, who rely on philanthropic support, #GivingTuesday provides an opportunity to join others in supporting the health of local communities.
Avera has participated in this “third act” in a series of seasonal shopping events. After the consumer frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday’s web-based buys, #GivingTuesday is a much welcomed shift from consumerism to charity and community.
While most recognize that generosity and giving back should be part of our everyday practice, sometimes we forget. #GivingTuesday is a great way for mission-based health care organizations to focus on a specific area of need and allow the donor to make a contribution the moment they feel compelled.
For 24 hours, countless charities flood social media to serve as a catalyst for giving. Avera uses the momentum of #GivingTuesday to tell compelling patient stories to inspire others to give and has highlighted programs such as precision oncology and music therapy.
Just like businesses, you and your family can take part in #GivingTuesday and support an area of your choice. After all, the health of the community is at its best when we all consider the ways we can contribute to making them grow.
And remember, the economy may need your spending but the community needs your giving.
