Creative Ways to Support Community Small Businesses on 605 Day

Did you know that for every $100 you spend at a local small business, $68 stays in the community? Those funds can help support little league teams, community events and encourage future small business entrepreneurs.

Those entrepreneurs and small business owners are feeling the economic pain of restrictions required by the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, Avera Health Plans has planned a way to support local small businesses and thank essential workers.

The Avera Health Plans 605 Day Challenge is a fun way to support local small businesses in cities around the Avera region. It will help both businesses and the front-line workers in health care and other essential industries working hard every day during the pandemic.

During the week of June 1, Avera Health Plans will purchase gift cards from South Dakota small businesses and give them to essential workers as a way to thank them for their dedication.

Avera Foundation leaders around the region – including Aberdeen, Pierre, Sioux Falls and Yankton – also will help coordinate efforts.

Avera Health Plans is hoping individuals and communities across South Dakota will join them in the celebration of 605 Day.

The challenge not only recognizes essential workers, it’s a way to lift up small businesses and celebrate the unique small businesses that are at the heart of our towns and cities.

When you and your communities support small businesses, those businesses may be more likely to thrive, and when they do, they can support community non-profits or other local services. Healthier local economies may encourage residents to make better health care decisions for themselves and their families.

So when presented with the opportunity to support a local small business, such as buying a present at a local gift shop or ordering takeout from a "mom and pop" restaurant — make the small gestures that can make a difference for future generations in the community.

Here are some creative ways to support your local community:

  • Buy coffee from a local roaster
  • Buy treats from a local baker
  • Purchase a gift from a local gift shop
  • Support a local brewery
  • Purchase art from a local artist
  • Get your oil changed by a local mechanic
  • Pick up a new summer outfit from a local boutique
  • Buy take-out from a locally owned restaurant
  • Provide a nice review for your locally owned businesses
