Can You Eat Healthy at Your Local Fair?
From carnival games to the Ferris wheel, you can find plenty of fun at your local fair. Another favorite at the fair? – Food. Funnel cakes, cheese curds, and ice cream, the options can seem endless. But maybe you’re looking for some healthy choices. Kaylee Gebhart, a dietitian with the Avera Heart Hospital has some tips to enjoy in moderation.
What are some ideal options we can indulge in at the fair?
I really think you can eat anything in moderation. If you’re eating healthy, nutritious fruits and vegetables and whole grains and trying to eat healthy 75%-90% of the time, I really think it’s ok to enjoy a few things in moderation like funnel cakes, and those deep fried foods occasionally. Watch your portion size and if you can share with somebody, family or friends, it’s ok to do in moderation, but it’s definitely not something to make into a habit.
Staying hydrated at the fair
Hydration is important in the hot summer days. If you can bring an empty water bottle to fill up while you are there. Water is going to be the best form of hydration for all of us this summer, especially out in the heat.
Other tips
Don’t go hungry. It’s ok to enjoy these foods in moderation. If you have the option, anything grilled or broiled entrees, instead of deep fat fried, that’s going to be a healthier option.
