Keep Your Skin Healthy this Summer with These Tips

During the summer months, you may need to adjust your skin care routine to protect your skin and keep it hydrated. Too much sun, along with heat, humidity and sweat, can all take a toll on your skin. Bo Wang, MD, a dermatologist with Avera Dermatology in Aberdeen shares some summer skin care tips.

Should I adjust my summer skin care routine for the summer?

The summertime brings more heat, more sun, people enjoy the outdoors. First of all, change your skin care routine accordingly. Start with a light moisturizer, more gel-based, like a light lotion. Also don’t forget the sunscreen. Sunscreen comes in different ways, like roll-ons, sprays, creams, mineral based and chemical based, so try different ones to see what works for you. There are also fabrics made especially for UV protection.

What SPF level of sunscreen should I be using for daily use?

Typically I would recommend 30 and above. Reapply every two hours, especially when you are going to do more outdoor activities where you sweat more, you’ll need to reapply more often. If you’re planning to spend a long time outdoors, like going on a hike or go to the beach, maybe choose a little bit higher SPF factor like 50.

Should I wear sunscreen when it is cloudy?

There are myths that "I can skip sunscreen on cloudy days," but actually 80% of the UV rays still penetrate the clouds.

How can I keep my skin hydrated?

Start inside out. Keep yourself well hydrated, drink enough water. In the shower use a mild cleanser and right after the shower, pat dry and start applying moisturizer head to toe.
