Population Health 101: Understanding the Big Picture

The first full week of April is National Public Health Week. It serves as a good reminder to focus on our own personal health and also do our part to improve the health of our community. David Basel, MD is the Vice President of Clinical Quality and Population Health Officer for Avera Health; he explains why population health is an important topic for the community to understand and for the health system to address.

What is population health?

  • Population health is the study and management of health outcomes within a group of people, focusing on the factors that influence health across communities or populations. It aims to improve overall health, reduce disparities and address the social, environmental and economic factors that impact well-being.

What are some of the public health factors that Avera is helping address?

  • Vaccinations: Educating the public about the importance of vaccination, ensuring access and promoting safety of new vaccines.
  • Managing chronic diseases: Preventing and managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
  • Mental health: Promoting well-being and addressing mental health disorders, which are increasingly prevalent. The partnership with the city of Sioux Falls on The Link is a great example of this mission in action.

What are some of the biggest challenges to population health and Avera’s efforts?

  • Some of the biggest challenges to population health efforts include limited access to health care, social and economic disparities, insufficient funding, lack of collaboration between sectors, and addressing the complex social determinants of health such as poverty, education and housing. Additionally, cultural barriers and resistance to change can also hinder progress.

What are some simple things people can do to have an impact on public health?

  • People can positively impact population health by promoting healthy behaviors, volunteering with local health organizations, supporting policies that improve health care access, advocating for community health, and educating others about wellness.
  • Focus on improving your own health with exercise and healthy eating habits. When you’re healthy, you’re able to make a more meaningful impact on your community's health.
