10 Tips to Resist Halloween Candy

Halloween unofficially marks the beginning of the holiday feasting season. And for anyone trying to watch his or her weight, the scariest part of Halloween is not ghosts and goblins but the ever-abundant Halloween candy everywhere you go. Sugar and mostly empty calories is what you get in candy, and the truth is that most of us don’t exercise enough to warrant those extra calories.

Hy-Vee Dietitian Anna Schroeder has some great tips on keeping your hands out of the candy so you can avoid extra pounds before the holiday even starts.

  1. Buy candy you don’t love. It’s easier to resist the candy your kids love but you don’t prefer.
  2. Out of sight, out of mind. Ask your co-workers to hide those candy dishes or keep them in the breakroom where you won’t see it every time you get up from your desk.
  3. Enjoy one piece of your favorite candy a day. Decide what time of day you most want a sweet and then take the time to really enjoy it.
  4. Chew gum. Sugarless gum gives your mouth a burst of sweetness.
  5. Replace it with better choices. Put out a bowl of colorful fruit or veggies in place of the candy.
  6. Count empty wrappers. Those fun-size candy bars are so easy to eat you can lose track quickly. Keep the wrappers on your desk to help you keep track.
  7. Take a walk. Get up and get some fresh air to get your mind off the sweets.
  8. Manage your hunger. Eat breakfast and plan the day’s meals and snacks so you’re better able to avoid unhealthy choices.
  9. Sip on a low-calorie drink. Drink water throughout the day. A light hot chocolate can satisfy a sweet craving for fewer calories.
  10. Do the Teal Pumpkin Project. Ditch the candy this Halloween and hand out non-food/allergy friendly items to kids.
