Try These Great Warm Drink Recipes

Chilly evenings are a great time to try these luscious recipes that offer enjoyable cupfuls of flavor. Avera McKennan Executive Chef Nicholas Skajewski offers three recipes to brighten the cold-weather months with sweetness and warmth.

Bourbon Dark (Hot) Chocolate

Serves 2

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ¼ cup dark chocolate cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Dash of honey to taste
  • Dash of water
  • One pinch cayenne pepper
  • One pinch salt
  • ¼ cup bourbon (optional)

Directions

  1. In saucepan, add cocoa powder, cinnamon, cayenne, salt, and water. Stir on low heat until all has dissolved and the mixture is no longer lumpy.
  2. Add milk, stir frequently to avoid scorching. Remove from heat when milk is desired drinking temperature. You are not cooking the milk, just warming it.
  3. Stir in vanilla and bourbon, if using.
  4. Top with marshmallows and drizzled dark chocolate to amp it up a bit. Enjoy!

Chocolate Maple Mocha

Serves 2

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 shots espresso
  • 3 teaspoons pure maple syrup
  • 1½ teaspoons dark cocoa powder

Directions

  1. In saucepan, warm milk over low heat.
  2. Stir together maple syrup and cocoa powder in a separate bowl until combined well.
  3. Pour hot (fresh) espresso and warmed milk into the maple/chocolate mix.
