Try These Great Warm Drink Recipes
Chilly evenings are a great time to try these luscious recipes that offer enjoyable cupfuls of flavor. Avera McKennan Executive Chef Nicholas Skajewski offers three recipes to brighten the cold-weather months with sweetness and warmth.
Bourbon Dark (Hot) Chocolate
Serves 2
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole milk
- ¼ cup dark chocolate cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- Dash of honey to taste
- Dash of water
- One pinch cayenne pepper
- One pinch salt
- ¼ cup bourbon (optional)
Directions
- In saucepan, add cocoa powder, cinnamon, cayenne, salt, and water. Stir on low heat until all has dissolved and the mixture is no longer lumpy.
- Add milk, stir frequently to avoid scorching. Remove from heat when milk is desired drinking temperature. You are not cooking the milk, just warming it.
- Stir in vanilla and bourbon, if using.
- Top with marshmallows and drizzled dark chocolate to amp it up a bit. Enjoy!
Chocolate Maple Mocha
Serves 2
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole milk
- 2 shots espresso
- 3 teaspoons pure maple syrup
- 1½ teaspoons dark cocoa powder
Directions
- In saucepan, warm milk over low heat.
- Stir together maple syrup and cocoa powder in a separate bowl until combined well.
- Pour hot (fresh) espresso and warmed milk into the maple/chocolate mix.
Nutella Hot Chocolate
Serves 2
Ingredients
- 3 cups whole milk
- ⅔ cups Nutella
- 1 cup heavy cream
- ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Directions
- Over medium low heat, simmer the milk and Nutella; whisk until smooth.
- Whip heavy cream and vanilla until soft peaks appear.
- Portion beverage in desired mug or mugs.
- Top with a dollop of whipped cream.
