Mom Talk: Preparing for Baby Number Two

I’m now in the third trimester of pregnancy with my second child. It is crazy to think that in under three months, I will be starting the newborn parent journey all over again. My husband and I are incredibly fortunate to be pregnant with our second child and to have a thriving toddler at home. However, as we anxiously await the arrival of our new little one, I am filled with all kinds of emotions that accompany this arrival.

Until this point, I have avoided thinking about all the things I should be doing to prepare, but now having written it all down, I am feeling more excited and less overwhelmed.

Here is what I will be doing to help prepare myself and our family for baby No. 2.

Preparing my Toddler

Not only do I want to prepare my 2-year-old for the new addition to our family, but I also want to help her become a little more independent. We’ve been working on getting dressed, feeding herself, and picking up her toys.

Start Making Big Kid-Bed Plans

We would like to start the transition to the big-kid-bed before baby comes. We know we will face some bumps in the road with this one, but we want to try and make this as exciting for her as possible.

Continue to Work on Potty Training

We have been working on potty training our 2-year-old and we will continue to try and stay as consistent as possible before baby number two arrives.

Prepare for Another Natural Birth

Aside from talking to my doctor about managing pain during delivery, I haven’t really given much thought to going through the birthing experience again. While having a natural birth is what I have planned in my head, I am well aware that when in the moment these plans change. I need to remember to stay flexible and nimble in my birth plan.

Locate and Clean Baby Supplies

Another perk of having one little one at home already is that there is so much less to buy, but I still need to locate and clean all of my baby supplies.

  • Convertible car seat
  • Baby monitor
  • Newborn swaddles
  • Newborn washcloths and towels
  • Breast pump and parts
  • Bottles
  • Bassinet
  • Newborn clothes

Declutter the House

Decluttering is an ongoing process in our house, but before baby comes I hope to have made progress on:

  • Cleaning out drawers for baby
  • Cleaning out my closet
  • Making a toddler toy area

Stock up on Freezer Meals

This is something I did not prepare for during my first pregnancy, but want to try and do the second time around. I have heard from other mom friends that having freezer meals ready to go when baby number two comes home is a lifesaver.

Finish Home Projects

Finishing up anything that has been left on the home improvement list will be much easier with one child than two.

Have a plan for number one when number two arrives

We do not have family that live in town, so having a plan in place on where our toddler will go when the time comes is very important.

Find time to cherish the last few months of being a family of three

As we grow ever closer to new baby, I will continue to cherish the time we have together as a family of three. I know that our transition to a family of four will come with changes, but these changes are meant to happen to help us grow and I can’t wait to see our family of four.
