Three Ways to Build a Relationship with Your Doctor
Building a relationship with a doctor is one of the most important investments you can make in your health.
“Your doctor is a trusted partner who can see the big picture of your health, helping you to stay on top of important preventive health issues before they become serious and help you set and achieve health goals,” said Kevin Post, DO, Chief Medical Officer of Avera Medical Group.
Follow these tips for building a relationship with your physician:
- Have an annual physical. Your yearly checkup is a conversation with your doctor about where you stand in your health journey, and helps ensure that you are up-to-date on important preventive health tasks like immunizations and cancer screenings.
- Be open and honest. Make sure your doctor has a clear picture of your health history. If your parent was diagnosed with cancer, if your grandparent survived a heart attack, if you use nicotine, struggle with depression or don’t feel safe in your home – these are important things for your doctor to know about. He or she is there to help, not judge.
- Sign up for AveraChart. Visit AveraChart.org and sign up for an account.
