Enjoy Retirement With Better Health

Health is important for enjoying life, yet as people age, numerous health conditions can crop up that get in the way of an active retirement lifestyle.

“Retirement is a time to take stock on your goals for the next 10 to 20 years. Perhaps your goal is to be more active, enjoy activities such as hunting or fishing, or spend time with grandchildren,” said Preston Renshaw, MD, Chief Medical Officer for Avera Health Plans. “Regular preventive care is important, because your doctor can help detect, manage or even cure a condition before it develops into a full-blown medical issue.”

Avera offers numerous levels of care and services to help people get the right care at the right time. It starts with your primary care physician. “This doctor knows you and your health history, and continues to be an important resource in staying healthy and can help you manage your ongoing health issues,” Renshaw said. Your primary care physician might be a family practitioner who has cared for you throughout the years, or an internal medicine physician who specializes in care for adults.

In total, Avera offers more than 60 medical specialties, when a person needs specialty care for a specific injury or illness. One example is orthopedics, which includes joint repair and replacement, fracture care, and care for the all-too-common symptoms of osteoarthritis.

While today’s health consumers have access to the full range of care options, sometimes the best place for care is at home. “People like to be in their own homes whenever possible. It’s where they are most comfortable, and have the support of loved ones. Thanks to services like Avera@Home, people can get quality care, at home, and in many case avoid extended time in the hospital, assisted living or long-term care facility,” Renshaw said.

If you’re covered by Medicare, it’s important to understand that Medicare doesn’t cover everything. For example, Medicare has no cap or out-of-pocket maximum, and this can place your retirement savings and other assets at risk.

“As you’re going on Medicare, it’s important to understand what your health expenditures have been in the past, and what your potential needs are,” Renshaw said. “Do you need a Medicare Supplement plan or are you better served with a Medicare Advantage or traditional Medicare product? Or do you have the out-of-pocket funds to pay expenses that are above and beyond what Medicare covers?”

It’s important buy Medicare Supplement Insurance at the right time. Each beneficiary has a personal open enrollment period for Medicare Supplement Insurance policies. During this open enrollment time, you can’t be turned down for pre-existing conditions. This period lasts for six months and begins on the first day of the month in which you’re both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B.

Avera Health Plans also offers a guarantee issue/open enrollment period that’s going on now through Feb. 14.
