Hit Your Fitness Goals at Any Age
As an active woman in her 70s, Sr. Lucille Welbig appreciated the benefits of exercise throughout her life. A breast cancer survivor as well, fitness has proved to be an even more valuable part of her life. Walking, her favorite exercise, has always given this self-proclaimed introvert the reflective time she needs to feel rejuvenated and ready to address system-level decisions at Avera.
However, when she attended the ribbon cutting for the Sioux Falls’ Avera Human Performance Center in the fall of 2019, she encountered a new type of challenge.
“I was talked into trying AR-FIT,” said Sr. Lucille. With the close proximity of the Avera Human Performance Center to her home, she decided to give it a try.
Designed for all ages, AR-FIT supports anyone’s goals to improve strength and conditioning. Participants discover different parts of their health being honed, such as their agility, flexibility, strength and stamina.
AR-FIT doesn’t cram dozens of people into a studio, but rather the classes are limited to 10 people at a time. “I’m not a competitive person, but instead felt encouraged by other participants working out alongside me,” said Sr. Lucille.

Each AR-FIT session focuses on total body strength, endurance, balance, flexibility and cardiovascular conditioning. Sessions are offered in a circuit training environment with exercises paired with rest intervals. All exercises can be tailored to anyone’s experience level, just as Sr. Lucille experienced.
Classes utilize a variety of equipment including treadmills, rowers, free weights, medicine balls, resistance bands, TRX systems, and strength machines. AR-FIT sessions are available year round and the Avera Human Performance Center also offers four 9-week AR-FIT challenges throughout the year.
For Sr. Lucille, she appreciated the intimacy of a small class size, the accountability of a scheduled workout, and personalization to help you reach your goal. She added, “My balance benefited the most from participating in AR-FIT.”
