How to Stay Active in Winter
By Debbie Lancto, Well-being Specialist, Avera Health Plans
When the snow is falling, the roads are iced over, and the temperature dips below freezing, it can be hard to get out of bed. You probably won’t feel like going for a walk or run in the park either. Winter may throw a wrench in your workout plans but you shouldn’t let it turn you into a couch potato.
Don’t let the coldest season put a damper on your fitness goals. Here are some useful tips to stay active during the cold months:
Try a winter activity:
- Cross country or downhill skiing
- Snow shoeing
- Sledding
- Ice skating
Join a gym or play indoor sports:
- Try a fitness class
- Find a workout buddy
- Join a basketball or a volleyball league
- Find an indoor swimming pool and swim laps
Plan a family activity that involves everyone:
- Build a snowman
- Walk the dog if the temperatures are decent
- Walk at the mall and do some window shopping
Exercise at home:
- Yoga
- Fitness apps that provide home workouts
- Fitness DVD
Challenge yourself by trying a new activity and have fun while doing it. It will be spring before we know it!
