No Time in the Day for Exercise? Take the Stairs!

When you’re busy it can be hard to get 30 minutes of activity into your day. Debbie Lancto, Health and Wellness Champion at Avera Health Plans, has a solution: take the stairs.

Research says using the stairs burns twice as many calories as walking.

For a 150 – 160 pound person, walking up one flight of stairs would burn about 15 calories. That means if you can go up the stairs six times in one day you’ll burn 90 calories!

To burn the extra calories take the stairs instead of the elevator during the day. If you want to step it up a notch, take a 10-minute break to do a little stair climbing.

  • These types of daily living activities can significantly contribute to your 30 minutes of activity.
  • Using the stairs improves leg strength and general aerobic capacity.
