New Behavioral Health Wing Helps More People in Crisis

With behavioral health needs at an all-time high, Avera has opened a new wing to help youth and those at-risk in a more meaningful way.

The Helmsley Behavioral Health Center, a new four-story wing at the Avera Behavioral Health Hospital in Sioux Falls, brings together several pieces of care and much-needed services where we’ve seen gaps in care. This includes residential addiction care for youth, more capacity for children and adolescents, and partial hospitalization space for youth and adults.

Behavioral Health Urgent Care

For the first time, behavioral health urgent care is offered at Avera. This is a front door for accessing behavioral health services in a crisis situation. It offers high level, high-volume access to care 24/7. It is staffed by advanced practice providers, counselors, and nursing and behavioral health techs.

Behavioral Health Urgent Care Lobby and Registration

For individuals experiencing a psychiatric crisis, the Behavioral Health Urgent Care lobby and registration admits patients so they can receive help right away through safety and observation.

Recreation and Game Room

Having fun builds the spirit up, too! A recreation and game room gives patients the opportunity to relax and hang out.

Exercise Room

Physical wellness along with emotional, mental and spiritual wellness is an important component of residents’ stay. A fitness center offers treadmills, rowers, exercise bikes and strength training equipment.

A designated classroom is available to accommodate therapy sessions, education, art therapy and more.

Inpatient Dining Room

Each wing in the Helmsley Behavioral Health Center has its own dining room for patients to enjoy meals.

Inpatient Senior Adult Room

Inpatient older adults have a room to themselves to ensure privacy and dignity. Each room has a bed, wardrobe, sink, bathroom and desk.

Inpatient Child Room

Children stay in their own rooms to ensure privacy and dignity. They help care for their rooms to build responsibility and self-confidence. Each room has a bed, wardrobe, sink, bathroom and desk.

Helping Young People Succeed

For the first time, Avera offers partial hospitalization to the youth in our community. Partial hospitalization involves therapy and treatment during the day while the patient goes home at night.

Youth can spend part of their day in school and part of their day making progress on their behavioral health condition that may be impeding their success in school and life.

Those in partial hospitalization take part in individual therapy, family meetings and case management and see a psychiatrist for medication management.

Generous Community Support

This facility was made possible thanks to a transformational gift from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, which included a community match that launched Avera Foundation’s “Light the Way Campaign.” More than 750 individual donors supported Avera’s vision for enhanced behavioral health care in our region. Donate Today!

The Helmsley Charitable Trust has partnered with Avera for decades, and has contributed to numerous health programs and facilities. Over the past 14 years they have committed $67 million in grant funds that benefit Avera patients.

We are excited to open a new door that involves behavioral health and the opportunity to help troubled youth with the hope that their lives can take a new trajectory toward a better future.
