Who Can Take the Course
The Heartsaver Instructor Essentials Course is an intensive course for instructor candidates who have already successfully completed the Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Course. The role and scope of practice of lay rescuers can vary greatly, so there are no profession-specific guidelines for becoming an AHA Instructor in a specific discipline. Instructor candidates should exemplify integrity, demonstrate strong ethics, communicate clearly, and model a dedication to quality of training.
Heartsaver instructor candidates must meet certain requirements before taking the Instructor Essentials Course. Before attending the hands-on session, all instructor candidates must:
• Be at least 18 years of age
• Complete the Instructor Candidate Application
• Complete the Avera Community Instructor Agreement Form
• Have a current AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED course completion card
• Be proficient in the skills of Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED
• Successfully complete the online portion of Instructor Essentials

Instructors Must Purchase and Bring the Heartsaver Instructor Manual and Student Workbook to the course. Please contact Avera Community Training Center to inquire about current American Heart Association pricing or visit https://shopcpr.heart.org/.
What to Wear to Class: Please wear loose, comfortable clothing. You will be practicing skills that require working on your hands and knees, bending, standing, and lifting. If you have physical conditions that might prevent you from participating in the course, please tell one of the faculty when you arrive for the course. Faculty will work to accommodate your needs within the stated course completion requirements.
Instructor Candidates must complete the Heartsaver Instructor Essentials online course, attend the classroom instructor course passing the Heartsaver Instructor Essentials Exam, and then be monitored teaching their first course within 6 months of having attended the Heartsaver Instructor Essentials Course. Upon successful completion of all course requirements, the Heartsaver Instructor card will be issued.
When will I receive my Heartsaver Instructor Card?
In order to receive an instructor card, instructor candidates must complete the Heartsaver Instructor Essentials Online course, attend a New Heartsaver Instructor course passing the Heartsaver Instructor Essentials Exam, and be monitored teaching their first course within 6 months of attending the classroom course.
