About Me

When he was younger, Adam Smith, MD, was inspired to pursue a career in medicine after witnessing the exceptional care his brother received while facing a heart condition. Seeing his brother get better and stronger confirmed that health care was a worthy calling for Dr. Smith’s own life.

Today, Dr. Smith is a gastroenterologist practicing at Avera Medical Group Gastroenterology in Sioux Falls, SD.

Expert Care in Gastroenterology

Dr. Smith cares for a variety of conditions related to the digestive system, including:

  • Chronic abdominal pain
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Liver disease
  • Colon polyps
  • Celiac disease
  • Esophageal symptoms

He encourages people to schedule their colonoscopy for early detection of colon cancer. “Preventive care through routine screenings has the potential to completely change the outcome should cancer be detected,” said Dr. Smith.

Check with your health insurance carrier to learn more about coverage for preventive screenings.

Military Career

Before arriving at Avera, Dr. Smith practiced gastroenterology in the Army. During his service, he was able to provide the kindness and dignity of care for young soldiers, military retirees and their families facing various health needs — further honing his skills.

“I had the great privilege of connecting with people from all walks of life from all over the United States,” said Dr. Smith.
