Family Medicine

"I want patients to have an active participation in their medical care. It helps when they take ownership of their medical problems, and learn about an illness so they can come equipped with questions. Then we can work as a team to get to the ultimate goal of getting them better."

About Me

If you need primary care for the entire family, Alexandra Witherspoon, MD, would love to help you at Avera Medical Group – Estherville, located in Estherville, IA.

Complete Care for All Ages

A native of Sumter, SC, Dr. Witherspoon decided to become a physician at a young age. Her interest in medicine was sparked because her mother almost died during childbirth and she wanted to learn more about why that happened.

Though she originally thought she’d become a pediatrician, Dr. Witherspoon soon realized that she enjoyed caring for people from birth through adulthood including the senior years, so family medicine became her field of choice.

Her special interests include community outreach, pediatrics and women's health. She is compassionate about developing relationships with patients and their families providing comprehensive medical care birth to adulthood.

"The best part of my job is having the chance to change someone's life and make a difference,” she said. “Just being able to see them achieve a goal and how we can do it together."

Active Lifestyle

Dr. Witherspoon is married with two boys, who keep her busy with their taekwondo, basketball, soccer and swimming lessons.

When she’s not running around with her children, Dr. Witherspoon enjoys creating her own unique culinary creations, and will even be using her love of all things food within her medical practice. She has plans to interweave culinary medicine — teaching patients how to eat right for their disease process — into her practice once she completes a training course.
