About Me

Put your hands in the expert hands of Garrison L. Whitaker, MD, who specializes in orthopedic hand surgery at Avera Medical Group Family Health Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Dr. Whitaker focuses on minimally invasive surgeries for hand and wrist injuries or disorders in adults and children.

Orthopedic Trauma Surgery Expertise

His fellowship-trained background includes less invasive orthopedic surgery solutions, and he is experienced with both soft tissue injury and bone trauma repair.

His surgical procedures include:

  • Minimally invasive hand and wrist surgery
  • Endoscopic carpal tunnel release
  • Tenex procedure for tennis elbow, including ultrasound surgical guidance
  • Arthroscopic management of wrist maladies and ganglion excision

With years as a surgeon, Dr. Whitaker strives to improve you or your loved one’s hand functionality and lessen pain. Helping his patients get back to what they enjoy doing most is what drives him to be a physician. Dr. Whitaker knows you want to play sports, work with your hands or simply lift your grandchildren. He is here to help you reach your hand goals.

What is his advice for surgery patients? Dr. Whitaker reminds them to be patient and take time to recover after hand surgery. Keep in mind it’s a process he advises, and let your body take the time to repair and heal. In addition to surgery, he also is an active lecturer for health professionals on CME accredited lecture topics relating to hand surgeries.

Active Lifestyle

When not in the operating room, Dr. Whitaker can be found on the mountain slopes—as an avid snowboarder. He also enjoys bicycling city trails and traveling the world. He loves having his family as his international travel companions.
