About Me

Hannah Statz DeVries, MD, recalls learning to embrace the Jesuit values which include caring for the whole person in mind, body and spirit. This made her an early witness to the biopsychosocial approach that is so intimately intertwined with psychiatry care. She found a passion in learning more about addiction, and furthered her training with an addiction psychiatry fellowship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

She now practices at Avera Medical Group Behavioral Health in conjunction with the Avera Addiction Care Center in Sioux Falls, SD.

Addiction Care Begins with Relationship

In addiction care, relationships are important. And one of the most important relationships during the journey is the inherent trust of the physician-patient relationship. For Dr. Statz DeVries, this allows for an incredibly meaningful profession.

“Hearing my patients’ stories garners a lot of trust on their part,” she said. “Caring for each person in mind, body and spirit and supporting them through treatment is one of the most rewarding and humbling experiences and it gives me purpose every morning.”

Personalized Care in Addiction and Psychiatry

Behavioral health care is a unique field; an individual’s treatment is as unique as the person themselves. Treatment may include a personalized approach in medication, outpatient therapy and/or inpatient care. The patient may move between levels of care as their journey continues.

“Addiction is an incredibly complex disease,” said Dr. Statz DeVries. “By getting to know a person and their story, I can better prescribe a treatment plan that the patient feels confident in.”

Active Lifestyle

Outside of work, Dr. Statz DeVries enjoys spending quality time with her family and friends. She also loves photography, running, organizing events and crafting.
