While completing his pediatric residency, Jeffrey Manzano Aquino, MD, found himself naturally gravitating toward the NICU; drawn not just by the medicine, but by the people. “I spent so much time there,” he recalled, “the staff became like family.”
At the time, he decided to expand and transform his focus into tiny humans’ care. “It was here when I saw how important it was to focus on the smallest patients and help them fight the good fight.”
Compassionate Care in Neonatology
You can trust his expertise and compassion while caring for your little one at Avera Medical Group Neonatology in Sioux Falls, SD.
Coming from a third world country, Dr. Manzano Aquino has seen what happens when families don’t have access to state-of-the-art options in treatment and technology.
At Avera, he embraces the mission and its commitment to patient care. Here, he’s able to treat patients at the top of his skillset while also bringing the latest treatments and services to his patients.
Dr. Manzano Aquino focuses on neurocognitive preservation and protection in newborns. An example of these conditions is intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), a type of brain bleed that occurs in the brain’s fluid-filled spaces called ventricles.
A Leading POCUS Expert
One unique expertise Dr. Manzano Aquino brings to Avera is his training in point of care ultrasound, or POCUS. In the NICU, ultrasound is used to evaluate critically ill newborns and create effective treatment protocols to guide care.

The role of the National Neonatal POCUS collaborative is to identify individuals who can become POCUS leaders, develop a POCUS curriculum, educate on POCUS procedures, and offer a unified pathway for credentialing in such a developing area of neonatology.
