“In primary care, I like to know and care for the whole person,” said Jennifer Veaco, MD. “I don’t just want to treat the heart, lungs or one certain organ. The human body and its organs talk to each other and affect other conditions.”
Today, as a family medicine physician, she serves patients of all ages with expert care at Hegg Health Center Avera in Rock Valley, IA
With a love of all sciences, she started exploring medicine in college by shadowing physicians and going on volunteer medical mission trips. It was her final rotation in family medicine during medical school that clinched her future.
“Everything came together, and it’s just the best part,” described Dr. Veaco. “I’m enamored that I get to see everyone that comes through the front doors – moms, children, grandparents."
Expert Care in Family Medicine
Dr. Veaco’s expertise in primary care allows her to provide a robust line of services, including:
- Routine checkups and physicals
- Well-woman exams
- Treatment for minor illnesses and injuries
- Immunizations and an advocate for preventive screenings
- Management of chronic conditions, including HIV
- Integrative medicine and holistic care
- Lactation medicine
She’s internationally certified in lactation medicine to care for moms striving to breastfeed their new babies. Dr. Veaco understands that this is a trying time for mom, so it’s rewarding to empower moms with the tools to express milk and feed their newborns.
An Advocate for Her Patients
Dr. Veaco comes to Avera with a wealth of respect for health care and patient care. She’s seen and been in your shoes. For example, she herself is a cancer survivor, and prominently helps patients remain informed of the Pap tests, colonoscopies and other screenings that they need.
Also, before coming to Avera, Dr. Veaco worked at an inner-city federally funded clinic in Phoenix, AZ. Here, she served people who are uninsured, unsheltered and have limited resources.
Active Lifestyle
Outside of work, it’s her family that fills her cup, her heart and her time. Whether simply having breakfast or dinner together, or playing games, Dr. Veaco treasures every moment together.
She also enjoys water activities, which include snorkeling, scuba diving or visiting aquariums to appreciate the fish and underwater world.
