Complementary and Complete Care
Dr. Anand decided to become a physician in high school. His interest in the intricate anatomy of the brain progressed into a study of brain development, function and treatment in children and adolescents.
Today, the younger population is more exposed to unhealthy chemicals, habits and influences that can have a profound effect on brain development and personal mental health. Without proper treatment, the effects may last a lifetime or even shorten a lifetime. Overall, the consequences may hinder a young adult from reaching his or her full potential.
Some of Dr. Anand’s areas of special interest include:
- Sleep disorders
- Substance abuse, including nicotine, alcohol, opioids or other drugs
- Bipolar disorder
Before coming to Avera, Dr. Anand was involved with substance abuse/addiction at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. As a principal investigator, with his team, he studied how smokers’ brains perceive cigarettes by analyzing brainwaves; and if smoker’s nicotine metabolism affects their nicotine dependence; along with e-cigarette use/ vaping and subsequent effects on adolescents and youth. He has presented his research at national and international platforms.
He hopes the conclusions from his ongoing studies will be a positive addition to his practice at Avera, and looks forward to any opportunity to study these subjects further.
Dr. Anand is married with one child. He enjoys spending time with them doing school and family projects. He also likes being outdoors and has a newfound joy of running.
