Program Overview and Policies
Avera Sacred Heart Hospital School of Radiologic Technology was established in 1948. The program is administered by a director, supervised by clinical preceptors and accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. The program is also recognized by the State of South Dakota and holds the Certificate of Authorization for Postsecondary Education from the Office of the Secretary of State.

About the Program
The program begins in the fall and lasts 24 consecutive months. Students spend 9-12 hours weekly in formal classes and 28-31 hours in clinical assignments at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton Medical Clinic, P.C., Vermillion Medical Clinic, Wagner Community Memorial Hospital Avera and St. Michael’s Hospital Avera under the supervision of registered radiologic technologists. Student rotations include day, evening, weekend and overnight hours. Students are expected to attend all didactic and clinical assignments. Each student is allowed 14 PTO (personal time off) per year for illness and/or vacation time. One PTO consists of either a morning session or an afternoon session.
Written examinations are given in each subject area and students are required to complete all program coursework, meet all clinical objectives and maintain a minimum grade of 80% in didactic courses and 85% in clinical courses.
Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate will receive a diploma and a Avera Sacred Heart School of Radiologic Technology gold pin. The diploma meets the Professional Component required by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology.
Upon receipt of an original transcript from the School of Radiologic Technology to one of the program’s affiliates, the student will be awarded the Baccalaureate Degree from the degree granting institution. The Baccalaureate Degree meets the Degree Component required by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology.
Both the Professional Component and the Degree Component are required by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists for a candidate to be eligible to sit for the initial certification and registration examination. Successful completion of the examination entitles the technologists to display the title of RT(R), Registered Technologist in Radiography.
