Inpatient Pharmacy Internship

The Avera McKennan internship program is designed as a structured, on-the-job training experience that supports the development of pharmacy students into competent, well-rounded practitioners. Through hands-on practical experience, interns build foundational skills while working alongside experienced healthcare professionals at Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center.

Student interns may take on a variety of responsibilities, including supporting and expanding clinical pharmacy services, assisting with medication distribution processes, contributing to quality improvement initiatives, and participating in research projects to enhance patient outcomes.

Program Highlights

The internship follows a progression of activities that align with pharmacy school curriculum for a structured learning experience. Other benefits include:

  • Direct application of pharmacy curriculum into practice
  • Exposure to a variety of practice settings and patient populations
  • Networking with other interns, technicians, pharmacists, and leaders
  • Leadership role opportunities
  • Residency preparation and CV building experiences
  • Structured learning experience

Program Timeline

Each student is paired with an intern experiential leader who serves as a mentor and resource. Additional mentorship opportunities occur while you assist with a PGY1 (post graduate year one) pharmacy resident research project.

Pre-Pharmacy & P1 Interns

Pre-pharmacy and P1 students primarily focus on medication distribution, developing foundational operational and customer service skills while collaborating with a multidisciplinary healthcare team. Students receive comprehensive, hands-on training in sterile & non-sterile compounding and gain in-depth familiarity with USP 795, USP 797 and USP 800 standards to ensure safe and compliant pharmacy practice.

P2 Interns

P2 interns begin developing competency in conducting medication histories and providing patient education. In addition, they gain experience in overseeing pharmacy medication distribution workflows and are given opportunities to assume leadership responsibilities by managing staff during designated lead shifts.

P3-P4 Interns

P3 interns are trained to complete patient medication histories and provide patient medication education prior to discharge for anticoagulant therapies. P3 interns have an opportunity to work in the ambulatory care setting, connecting with patients on lab value interpretation and medication dose adjustments under the supervision of the ambulatory pharmacy team. They also have the opportunity to work in the behavioral health setting to increase comfort in this area through completion of medication histories and working with behavioral health-trained pharmacists. Beyond these clinical experiences, P3 interns may pursue specialized roles in areas such as adverse drug reaction reporting, scheduling, or administration, further broadening their professional development.

P4 interns continue to develop their clinical knowledge and professional skills by working shifts during academic breaks from APPE rotations as they desire.
