PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Program

This Postgraduate Year Two Pharmacy Residency (PGY2) program at Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center is a new program dedicated to ambulatory pharmacy practice.

It’s designed to develop clinical pharmacists to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care in the outpatient setting. The residency program will prepare the pharmacist to serve as an independent practitioner and to pursue board certification (BCACP) if desired.

  • Endocrinology
  • Internal medicine
  • Primary care
  • Population health
  • Specialty pharmacy

Residency Program Details

Outcomes

  1. Develop the knowledge and skill set to provide evidenced-based care for patients’ multiple comorbidities in the outpatient setting at a specialist level.
  2. Refine teaching techniques in didactic as well as precepting and continuing education settings.
  3. Expand on clinical research skills.
  4. Further develop leadership skills.

Program Structure

Required (5 weeks each unless otherwise indicated):

  • Orientation – 4 weeks
  • Ambulatory pharmacy administration
  • Endocrinology
  • Internal medicine – anticoagulation
  • Internal medicine – chronic disease state management
  • Population health
  • Primary care 1
  • Primary care 2

Longitudinal Experiences (Required):

  • Practice advancement
    • Medication use evaluation – 1 annually
    • Formulary review – 1 annually
    • Attend the following practice advancement committees
      • Ambulatory care pharmacy team meetings
      • Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Committee
      • Pharmacy Pearls for Prescribers Committee
      • Specialty Pharmacy Clinical Oversight Committee
      • Specialty Pharmacy Quality Management Committee
  • Research project
  • Staffing
    • Staffing requirement will be one 8-hour shift per week at the Avera Specialty Pharmacy. Job responsibilities may include counseling calls, pre-verification, MTM services and/or other duties as needed.
    • REMS certification may be required.

Electives (4 weeks each. Residents may take up to four (4) elective learning experiences per year.)

  • Oncology
  • Pharmacogenomics
  • Transitions of care
  • Other elective opportunities available upon review with RPD

Other Expected Activities:

  • Pharmacy grand rounds presentations – 2 annually
  • Journal club – 2 annually
  • Creation and upkeep of Avera Pharmacy Pearls for Prescribers – at least 1 per month
  • Completion of all direct patient care activities
  • Poster presentation at a professional conference
  • Serve as supporting preceptor for pharmacy students and PGY1 pharmacy residents
  • Completion of teaching certificate program (if not completed as a PGY1)

Program Completion Requirements

  • Obtain ACHR status on 90% of all required goals and objectives during residency year
  • Satisfactory progress on completion of all additional program requirements and documentation of deliverables in resident portfolio including:
    • Research project
    • Avera Pharmacy Pearls for Prescribers
    • Medication use evaluation
    • Formulary review
    • Direct patient care activities
    • Pharmacy grand rounds presentations
    • Journal club presentations
  • Fulfill 90% of staffing responsibilities

Residency Application Process

Qualifications and requirements for candidacy:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited degree program
  • Licensed or eligible to apply for a license to practice pharmacy in the state of South Dakota
  • A copy of transcripts: Undergraduate or non-pharmacy transcripts are not required. Only pharmacy school-related coursework must be submitted.
  • Letter of intent describing reasons for seeking residency.
  • Three professional references using the Standardized Reference Template in the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS)
  • Copy of curriculum vitae
