Vascular Services

The Avera Heart Hospital is a leader in vascular care and innovation. Our physicians are experienced in all aspects of vascular intervention and surgery. The Avera Heart Hospital has 4 state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization labs specializing in cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, and vascular medicine. Avera Heart Hospital and North Central Heart Institute have enrolled in over 150 research studies, helping to drive the future of cardiovascular care.

Avera Heart Hospital opened a new state-of-the-art hybrid robotic vascular lab. This is only lab of its type in the region. The robot provides unmatched positioning flexibility to enable the most advanced images and techniques. See inside the robotic hybrid vascular lab.

Carotid Stents

You have an artery on each side of your neck called the carotid artery. This artery brings needed blood to your brain and face. The blood flow in this artery can become partly or totally blocked by fatty material called plaque. A partial blockage is called carotid artery stenosis (narrowing). Blockage in your carotid artery can reduce the blood supply to your brain. A stroke can occur if your brain does not get enough blood.

If your physician evaluates that you are a good candidate, carotid artery narrowing can be treated in the cardiac catheterization lab. The physician will use angioplasty and then a stent to open the carotid arterystent to open the carotid artery. Sometimes a small mesh filter will also be used in the procedure to capture any hardened plaque that may be dislodged. Patients typically are able to leave the hospital the day after this procedure.

Peripheral Arteriogram

An arteriogram is an imaging test that uses x-rays and a special dye to see inside the arteries. It can be used to see arteries in the heart, brain, kidney, and many other parts of the body. The procedure is often called angiography.

Peripheral Stents

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a type of atherosclerosis. It occurs when arteries in the limbs (most often the legs) become narrowed by cholesterol-rich material called plaque. Because PAD interferes with circulation, advanced cases increase the risk for gangrene and amputation. Patients with PAD are also at increased risk for heart attacks and strokes.

In some cases, a peripheral stent may be used to treat PAD. A stent is a tiny tube placed into an artery, blood vessel, or other duct (such as one that carries urine) to hold the structure open.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurism Stents

Endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair is surgery to fix a widened part (or aneurysm) in your aorta, the large artery that carries blood to your belly, pelvis, and legs. An aortic aneurysm is when a part of this artery becomes too large, or balloons outward, due to weakness in the wall of the artery.

The doctor uses x-rays to guide the stent graft up into your aorta, to where the aneurysm is located. The doctor will open the stent using a spring-like mechanism and attach it to the walls of the aorta. Your aneurysm will eventually shrink around it. Patient Testimonial

Patent Foramen Ovale

While a baby grows in the womb, there is a normal opening between the left and right atria (upper chambers) of the heart. If this opening fails to close naturally soon after the baby is born, the hole is called patent foramen ovale (PFO).

Often no treatment is needed for a PFO, but for a small population who is at risk of repeated stroke, or other complications, a PFO can be closed in the cardiac catheterization lab. The Avera Heart Hosptial physicians are experienced at this procedure.

A technique uses an ultrasound probe passed down the esophagus (transesophageal echo, or TEE) to allow your doctor to see the heart structures and blood flow as the device is being placed. Or, a special balloon on a catheter may be moved to the area of the hole and inflated across the hole in order to measure the size of the hole.

A PFO closure device is moved through the catheter to the heart and specifically to the location of the heart wall defect. Once in the correct location, the PFO closure device is allowed to expand its shape to straddle each side of the hole. The device will remain in the heart permanently to stop the abnormal flow of blood between the two chambers of the heart.
