Avera Addiction Care Center

Avera Addiction Care Center is a department of Avera Behavioral Health, with over 60 years of history as the Upper Midwest’s leader in behavioral health services. The Avera Addiction Care Center is located on the Avera on Louise Health Campus, in Sioux Falls, SD, just east of the 69th Street and Louise Avenue intersection.

Located east of the Avera Specialty Hospital and Avera Medical Group clinics, the Avera Addiction Care Center is a 20,000-square-foot residential treatment facility for adults who wish to address drug or alcohol addiction. A one-of-a-kind care facility for the Upper Midwest, this center’s 28-day voluntary recovery program focuses on addiction treatment.

"One of the most important drivers is our belief that addiction is a disease that needs to be treated rather than a character flaw that people should feel ashamed of."

- Thomas Otten, Assistant Vice President for Avera Behavioral Health Services

Join an Evidence-based Addiction Recovery Program

Addiction is a disease; we’re committed to helping you or your loved one along the way toward recovery with compassionate care. The Avera Addiction Care Center focuses on drug and alcohol addictions with a 28-day residential treatment program.

After medical stabilization for withdrawal symptoms (may include medication-assisted therapies), residents will receive a tailor-made recovery program based on their personal needs. Multiple, evidence-based approaches will be available—as there is more than one, single path to recovery. Residents will participate in a minimum of 30 hours of clinical services each week.

Personalized treatment programs include aspects of varied approaches such as:

  • Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)
  • Motivational interviewing and more

Group and individual sessions are integrated throughout programs—and evening and weekend hours will include rest time, family visits, hands-on activities (including daily chores, art therapy, recreation therapy and cooking classes). Residents will also be able to connect with others in the recovery community in facilitated support group meetings. Treatment steps will encompass addressing the needs of the whole person – body, mind and spirit, as is the Avera health care philosophy.

Mental Health Fact: Some 60% of patients in Avera’s behavioral health inpatient center have co-occurring disorders of addiction and another mental health condition such as depression or bipolar disorder. Yet after an acute stay in the hospital, many patients need ongoing addiction care at a greater intensity than outpatient services.

Here for You: A Multidisciplinary Behavioral Health Team

The Avera Addiction Care Center provides a multidisciplinary team of behavioral health experts—and offers level 3.7 residential care following criteria of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). Therapists are master level therapists licensed in mental health therapy and addiction, with support from psychiatrists who round regularly and are readily available. Nursing staff is available 24/7, and residents also benefit from navigators and nutritional support.

As a member of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation Patient Care Network, Avera leadership, staff, patients, families and communities also have access to tools, resources and collaborative consultations from the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation – the nation’s leading nonprofit addiction treatment provider. Hazelden curriculum is woven throughout the programming at the Avera Addiction Care Center.

Choosing an Addiction Treatment Center: Tips from Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation.

"Our region, like the rest of the country, has an addiction rate of around 10%. It’s a tremendously damaging illness that’s often hard to recognize and hard to treat. It’s taking lives."

- Matthew Stanley, DO, Vice President for the Behavioral Health Clinical Service Line and Medical Director of Avera Behavioral Health Services

Find Ongoing Recovery Support with Family Inclusion

The first 12 months of recovery can be the most challenging, and the Avera Addiction Care Center wants to give all residents the best tools possible for success. When residents check in, they receive a tablet to use throughout their stay with an app for therapists to communicate with residents and send them materials.

Overcome Addiction in Your Community

Make a donation to Avera and help your community to be healthier, stronger and free from addiction.

Upon check-out, residents can receive additional support that includes ongoing outpatient care or telemedicine sessions with therapists, as needed. A navigator will follow patients for one year after treatment to help monitor stability and prevent relapse.

Family members are provided a wealth of support and education about addiction and recovery, along with help developing a wellness program for their recovering loved one and their own personal wellness program. A proven fact, both family and ongoing clinical support are vital to long-term sobriety.

Live Better. Live Balanced. Avera.
