Screening & Early Detection
Did you know that one in eight U.S. women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime? If detected early, it is very treatable. There are some factors that can increase your risk, including:
- A family history of breast cancer
- Age 40 or older
- Being overweight
- Alcohol consumption
- Breast density
Talk to your doctor about the best breast cancer screening plan for you, given your age and patient history.
Avera offers digital and 3-D mammograms, which detect changes in the breast that may indicate early signs of cancer too small or subtle to be felt by self-exams. When additional testing is needed, Avera has a full range of breast imaging technology, including contrast enhanced spectral mammography (CESM), breast ultrasound, breast MRI and more.
You can request a mammogram appointment in Sioux Falls using our secure online form, or by calling 605-322-7465.

When you’re new to your breast cancer journey, it helps to have someone there guiding you through the process. That's why we team each of our patients with a certified breast patient navigator. Our navigators serve as a knowledgeable, supportive guide from initial screening and diagnosis — by mammogram, ultrasound, MRI, or CESM — through treatment and follow-up care.
In the initial abnormal screening phase, our certified breast radiology tech navigators can answer your questions about your screening results, follow up imaging appointments and biopsies.
Our breast cancer patient navigators are certified nurse practitioners who provide education and support in every phase of treatment. When you talk with your navigator, you can feel confident she is committed to understanding your unique needs and will assist you during your specific care plan.
Discussions with our breast navigators allow you to weigh treatment options in a compassionate environment with an experienced professional.
