Lung Cancer Screening

A lung cancer screening is for patients who do not have symptoms yet but are at a high risk. The low-dose CT scan looks for lung nodules that may be early lung cancer. This screening offers the best chance of finding it in its earliest and most curable stages.

  • Simple, 15-second screening administered by a quick pass across your chest.
  • Reduces risk by 20% of lung cancer-related death.
  • Recommended for anyone ages 50-77 who has at least a 20-pack-year smoking history, currently smokes or has quit within the last 15 years.

Ask your doctor for a referral or contact Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center radiology at 507-537-9189 to learn more.

Genetic Testing & Counseling

Avera’s genetic testing and counseling experts can help determine if you have higher risk for certain types of cancer based on your DNA and other risk factors. This approach helps you and your family members make informed decisions about prevention measures and screening options for early cancer detection. Also, genetic testing can sometimes be used to guide the oncologist when providing treatment recommendations.

Cancer Research & Clinical Trials

Avera Cancer Institute’s clinical research advance the science of medicine, and may provide additional options for cancer patients who qualify for studies we’re enrolling for. Patients always receive evidence-based standard treatment for all types of cancer, yet clinical trials may provide additional options. Review a wide variety of clinical trials, including several studies currently enrolling patients.

Cancer Genomics

Using genomic testing, Avera’s cancer program can provide patients with personalized medicine, targeted therapies and treatment plans based on their personal cancer genes. Avera Cancer Institute is part of a global network of organizations — called the Worldwide Innovative Networking Consortium — working to make personalized cancer care a reality for patients worldwide.

Oncology Recognition & Clinical Excellence

Avera’s commitment to high-quality cancer care resulted in network accreditations from both the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (COC) and American Society of Clinical Oncology Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI). These accreditations and certifications verify quality and clinical excellence plus our ongoing dedication to performance improvement — ultimately benefiting patient care.

QOPI Certification emblem

To achieve certification, Avera Cancer Institute had to meet or exceed national quality standards for cancer care. The QOPI Certification Program, LLC, designates Avera Cancer Institute as a large, multi-site practice, which includes the entire Avera Health system and all of our medical oncology and hematology services.
