Local Cancer Care Expertise

What to Expect

Our team offers comprehensive care including diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care for a variety of cancers. When you are diagnosed with cancer, our team provides immediate consultation – and will coordinate and direct your medical care. Your medical oncologist will:

  • Educate you about your type of cancer and the stage of the cancer.
  • Explain standard and evidence-based treatment options and work with you to develop a treatment plan to help you experience the best possible outcome.
  • Follow up with you to monitor your condition and health status.
  • Refer you to other specialists as needed, including cancer surgeons and radiation oncologists.

Types of Cancer Treatments

In addition to your oncology team in this clinic, Avera has a larger, integrated team committed to your care for local in-person care, via telemedicine or travel only if needed. We offer:

  • Surgical care including advanced, minimally invasive and robotic techniques
  • Radiation therapy
  • Chemotherapy and biotherapy
  • Genomic medicine (also known as precision oncology)
  • Connection to clinical trials that may provide treatment options in addition to standard of care

Infusion Center

Receive your chemotherapy and infusion treatments under the care of some of the region’s foremost experts in cancer care. Most infusion suites are private and can be made semi-private by opening sliding doors. This gives patients the choice to receive infusions privately, with friends or family, or enjoying the company of other patients. Infusion suites feature custom-built chairs for comfort as well as TV and plenty of outlets for personal electronic devices.

Genetic Testing & Counseling

Our genetic testing and counseling team can help determine if you have higher risk for certain types of cancer based on your DNA and other risk factors. This approach helps you and your family members make informed decisions about prevention measures and screening options for early detection of cancer. Also, genetic testing can sometimes be used to guide the oncologist when providing treatment recommendations.

24/7 Patient Navigation

Nurses and social workers are here to talk through your questions or concerns. The Navigation Center is available to anyone impacted by cancer including families. No matter what you face, there’s a real person waiting to help just one phone call away.

Second Opinion Consultations

It’s common for people to want a second opinion regarding a cancer diagnosis. We can help. Submit a second opinion request to our cancer navigation center.

Cancer Research & Clinical Trials

Avera Cancer Institute’s clinical research trials advance the science of medicine, and may provide additional options for cancer patients who qualify for studies we’re enrolling for. Patients always receive evidence-based standard treatment for all types of cancer, yet clinical trials may provide additional options. Review a wide variety of clinical trials, including several studies currently enrolling patients.
