Many types of solid tumors appear on these scans, which use positron emission tomography with computed tomography technology. PET-CT scans deliver detailed, 3D images of bones, tissues and organs – which enabling our trained radiologists to provide guidance and deeper intelligence to your oncology team to determine a cancer’s stage, provide an accurate diagnosis and develop a treatment plan. These scans are also often used as a follow-up during or after cancer treatment to determine the effectiveness of treatment.
The American College of Radiology (ACR) has accredited PET-CT imaging services at Avera Cancer Institute including:
- FDG: This scan is used to detect possible spread of cancer for patients with various types of cancer, including lung, colorectal cancer, lymphoma, melanoma, breast, ovary, brain and multiple myeloma. It also can monitor treatments and therapy response.
- Ga PSMA: For patients with prostate cancer, this scan can pinpoint tumors by detecting PSMA (prostate-specific membrane antigen) proteins.
- Ga Dotatate: This test can find neuroendocrine cancer cells.
