Avera Queen of Peace History

  • At the request of Mitchell, SD, civic leaders, the Presentation Sisters of Aberdeen established St. Joseph Hospital, a 35-bed facility, which officially opened on November 15, 1906.
  • As Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, the facility has undergone many improvements. The union of St. Joseph Hospital and Methodist Hospital in 1991 created Queen of Peace Hospital, an important step in this evolution. What began as a small, pioneering hospital on the prairie has become a comprehensive medical facility offering sophisticated technology and services.
  • A $15-million expansion in 1994 included a new emergency department, operating suites, same-day services, diagnostic imaging, surgical unit, cardiopulmonary services and laboratory.
  • With the formation of Avera Health in 2000, the hospital became Avera Queen of Peace Hospital.
  • In 2006, we completed a $6-million expansion project that added two new floors to accommodate surgical services and the Women’s Center.
  • In 2016, Avera Queen of Peace opened a three-story, 70,000-square-foot facility on the Avera Grassland Health Campus located on the south side of Interstate 90. The facility houses the latest technology and a comprehensive mix of medical services and specialty care.
