Avera Research Institute is dedicated to improving health for mothers and their children through community-based research and clinical trials. With a focus on historically high-risk or medically underserved populations, our efforts directly benefit patients on many fronts including education, cultural resonance and innovation. Clinical trials focus on improving maternal and pediatric health and development for conditions such as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

We want to see that moms and babies are healthy throughout pregnancy, delivery and beyond. Increasing access to obstetrics services improves outcomes like pre-term labor, low birthweight and infant mortality in South Dakota. For that to happen, moms need high-quality prenatal care and careful management of conditions such as high blood pressure and gestational diabetes, regardless of their ZIP code or income level. We work with Lakota communities to improve health together for the region. Our collaboration with the Oglala Sioux Tribe assists with various studies to improve the health and well-being of Plains Indian, for infant care sleep practices, system science and community building on the reservation.
