About

Our critical access hospital began as St. Anthony’s Hospital in 1952 and later joined Avera in 1998. The Sisters of St. Francis organized funds to grow the town’s Doctors Brown and French Hospital with strong local support. An addition was made in 1975, and in 1989, the hospital board included more community members to help develop funding for future expansion.

Our commitment to accessible, cost-effective rural health care is inspired by the traditions of the Sisters of the Presentation and Benedictine orders. Today, Avera St. Anthony’s Hospital is the fourth largest critical access hospital in Nebraska.

Patients & Visitors

  • Parking spaces are available for patients and visitors in lots by the main south entrance and across the street to the west of the building.

Surgery Services

When you need a procedure, your doctor and care team will schedule you for surgery at our hospital when possible. You will receive any special instructions beforehand to go over important details such as time of arrival and of surgery. Our surgeons and care team perform inpatient surgeries (patients will have a hospital stay after their procedure) as well as outpatient procedures (patients go home the same day as their surgery).

  • Physicians at our family medicine clinic provide local surgical services, including arthroscopy, colonoscopies, esophagogastroduodenoscopies (EGD) and c-section procedures.
  • On-site and outreach surgeons provide local specialty surgical services, including appendectomy, gallbladder removal, hernia surgery and orthopedic surgery.

It is important to follow staff instructions in preparing for your surgery and recovery. Please wear comfortable clothes and bring insurance, medication and supplement information, as well as paperwork provided by your surgeon. Leave valuables at home, and if you will have anesthesia, you’ll want to arrange for a ride home.
