Our hospital is the only one of a similar size and with similar services for more than 100 miles. We provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient health care.

  • Patients receive local, high-quality inpatient hospital care and intensive care unit (ICU) care at Avera St. Mary’s.
  • Right in Pierre, medical staff deliver babies at our Women’s Center.

Visiting Hours & Policies

General Inpatient Care

  • Visiting: 8 AM – 8:30 PM every day
  • Location: 4th floor of the main hospital. Take elevator bank 1.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

  • Visiting: For the well-being of our patients, ICU visitation is restricted. Before you visit, call the nurses station at 605-224-3270.
  • Location: 4th floor of the main hospital. Take elevator bank 1.

Women’s Center

  • Visiting: 8 AM – 8:30 PM every day
  • Location: 3rd floor of the main hospital. Take elevator bank 2.

Policies

  • We recommend no more than two visitors at a time.
  • Minors and dependent adults must be accompanied at all times by a responsible adult.
  • We may restrict visitors, temporarily close buildings and adjust hours to protect the safety of patients and staff.

Same-Day Surgery

Our specially trained surgeons and nurses provide quality care for same-day surgery patients in a comfortable setting where you also receive preoperative and post-surgery recovery care.

Outpatient Treatment Center

Services focus on intravenous (IV) infusions of medication and treatments for conditions including:

  • Infectious diseases, including COVID-19, using antibiotics and other medications
  • Blood transfusions and plasma exchange
  • Dehydration treatment
  • Electrolyte replacement therapies
  • Rabies injections and treatment
  • Treatment for various autoimmune disorders in specialty areas including gastrointestinal (GI), rheumatology, nephrology and neurology

Infusion for cancer patients is located in the Helmsley Center on campus.

On-Campus Pharmacy

We have multiple pharmacy options for our patients.

  • Walk-In and Drive-Up Pharmacy: Our on-site pharmacy in another building on campus provides a full range of prescription medications available for pickup for your convenience.
  • 24/7 Script Center Pharmacy Kiosk: Located inside the main hospital lobby, the kiosk dispenses medications for patients signed up for this service. Ask your Avera pharmacist or call 605-224-7334 if you have questions or want to transfer your prescriptions to the kiosk. After you’re set up, you’ll visit the kiosk, enter your information on screen, and then receive the dispensed medication. Scripts are loaded in the kiosk at 4 PM each day.
  • Pharmacotherapy: We see patients in Pierre at our pharmacotherapy clinic, which specializes in the care and management of diabetes, blood pressure and high cholesterol.
  • Specialty Medications: If your care requires a specialty prescription not available in our on-campus pharmacy, local staff can connect you with the Avera Specialty Pharmacy in Sioux Falls to fill and ship your medicines.

Mammography

Avera St. Mary’s Hospital offers 3D mammograms. Mammograms are an important health screening for women ages 40 and older. Request an appointment at this location or call 605- 224-3369.

Radiology & Imaging

We offer innovative imaging technology; CT scans and X-rays are available for clinical staff to order around the clock for patients making scheduled, urgent care or emergency visits. Experts conduct comfortable and quick imaging, so you receive accurate diagnosis which will determine the right treatment for your health.

Laboratory

Right inside our facility, you have access to a wide range of laboratory services that contribute to accurate diagnoses of medical conditions. Expert specialists conduct safe and reliable lab testing, helping you and your provider get the results you need to start an effective and personalized treatment plan.

Avera Lab Direct Access Testing

This location also offers Avera Lab Direct Access Testing, which lets you quickly and confidentially order a variety of tests without a doctor’s order. These tests help you monitor ongoing risks — such as complete blood count, glucose, lipids or hemoglobin — but shouldn’t be a replacement from the personalized care of your primary care provider.

Wound Care Center

Visit Avera's experts in Pierre for comprehensive treatment of wounds and burns, therapy and ostomy care. You have access to the latest technology and treatment measures, including:

  • Compression wrapping
  • Debridement
  • Gradient compression garments
  • Manual lymphatic drainage
  • Orthotics
  • Pain management
  • Pressure relief appliances such as mattresses, cushions, etc.
  • Specialized dressings
  • Therapeutic exercise
  • Topical medications

If your circumstances require advanced wound care, you have access to:

  • Cellular tissue products
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Negative pressure vacuum-assisted closure
  • Surgical wound closure

Cardiovascular Screenings

The best way to know your unique risk for cardiovascular disease is with a Planet Heart screening — available for men ages 40+ and women ages 45+. Most patients get both screenings done with one appointment. Call us today to schedule your personalized appointment in Pierre, SD.

  • The $75 heart screening includes: calcium score CT, blood pressure, cholesterol and limited nutrition and tobacco cessation counseling (as needed).
  • The $75 vascular screening includes: carotid artery screening, abdominal aortic aneurysm screening, lung scan and peripheral artery disease screening.
  • The all-in-one, $125 screening includes everything listed for the heart and vascular screenings.

Respiratory Therapy

If you live with a respiratory condition or have trouble breathing, our local team provides advanced respiratory care to newborns through adults. We diagnose respiratory issues and offer treatment options that include:

Sleep Lab

Get high-quality sleep medicine care from our nationally recognized sleep diagnostic center, which is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. We offer both in-center and at-home sleep study options.

Sleep Study Referrals
Any physician can refer you for a sleep study at our diagnostic center, so talk to your doctor if you’re interested. One of our pulmonologists reviews each patient referral before ordering and scheduling a sleep study test.

Visitors and staff can enjoy a meal or snack in our bistro or from vending machines throughout the campus.

Riverstone Bistro
Inside the Helmsley Center on campus, the bistro offers:

  • Hot food is available Monday – Friday, 7:30 AM – 9 AM and 11 AM – 1:30 PM.
  • Sandwiches, snacks, desserts, beverage and cold cereal available 7:30 AM – 1:30 PM

Patient Meals
Patients staying in the hospital have access to restaurant-quality meals served on-demand throughout the day, with guest trays available upon request.

Meditation Room

You can find a quiet place for prayer and meditation on campus in the Helmsley Center when that building is open for clinic visits.

Holiday Hours

The hospital and emergency department are open 24/7 – including holidays. On-campus clinics typically close for major holidays, including New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Hospital visiting hours and amenities hours will vary.
