Milbank Area Hospital Avera named a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital

MILBANK, S.D. (July 1, 2014) – For the second consecutive year Milbank Area Hospital Avera (MAHA) has been named one of the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals in the United States. MAHA is one of five Critical Access Hospitals in South Dakota to earn this recognition.

“We are honored to be recognized again for this award. MAHA is proud of the efforts of our physicians and staff who have contributed to our hospital achieving this designation,” said Natalie Gauer, hospital administrator. “This award demonstrates the focus our facility and employees have on patient-centered care and offering the highest quality service we can provide.”

MAHA scored in the top 100 of Critical Access Hospitals (CAH) on the iVantage Hospital Strength Index. The results recognize that the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals provide a safety net to communities across rural America. There are 1,300 CAHs in the United States.

“Rural health care deserves the same performance analysis as all provider performance. It plays a vital role for communities across America, serving nearly 80 million people. These top 100 Critical Access Hospitals exhibit a focused concern for their community benefits and needs, regardless of scale, reimbursement and people’s ability to pay,” said John Morrow, executive vice president of iVantage Health Analytics.

A CAH is a hospital certified to receive cost-based reimbursement from Medicare. This program is intended to reduce hospital closures in rural areas, promotes a process for improving rural health care, and focuses on community needs. CAHs can have a maximum of 25 acute care inpatient beds and provide 24-hour emergency services and be located in a rural area.

MAH will remain a CAH after the new health care campus is built.

“We strive every year to remain on this prestigious list and be among the top critical access hospitals in the country. We continually strive to make our service and quality better,” stated Gauer. “We look forward to providing Milbank and the surrounding communities with a new state of the art facility to help us serve you even better into the future.”
